Sense of Touch

✋ What do families feel when they visit your church?
The sense of touch deeply shapes how families experience your church because it communicates comfort, care, and connection without words. A firm handshake, a warm hug, or a friendly pat on the shoulder can instantly make newcomers feel welcome and valued. The physical environment also matters—comfortable seating, clean and safe children’s areas, and a building that is well-kept all speak volumes about how much a church cares for its people. Even simple touches, like the texture of printed materials or the feel of a child’s craft project, can reinforce a sense of belonging. When thoughtfully planned, touch helps both new and long-time families experience your church as a place of warmth, safety, and genuine community.
Here are a couple question you can begin to ask yourself about how your church values what people FEEL?
Do your greeters offer warm smiles, handshakes, or child-friendly high-fives?
Is the nursery and kids’ spaces are safe, clean, and equipped welcoming materials.
Are the seating areas (pews/chairs) are comfortable and family-friendly?
Does your church do events that gets families opportunities to engage physically?
